📋 Washington State-Level Regulations
Washington State has comprehensive greywater regulations through the State Board of Health and Department of Health.
Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 246-274-200
Allowance: Greywater systems are permitted with proper permitting
Applies to: Residential and some commercial properties
Restrictions: Must meet design standards, no pooling, subsurface irrigation
Two tiers: Tier 1 (simpler, lower flow) and Tier 2 (more complex, higher flow)
Key Requirements
• Tier 1: Up to 60 gallons/day, simplified installation
• Tier 2: 60-300 gallons/day, requires detailed plans
• Permit required from local health department
• System must be designed and installed per WAC standards
• Mulch basins or subsurface irrigation required
• Cannot be used on root vegetables or vegetables that touch the soil
